"Clock of Nations" at Midtown Plaza in Rochester, New York, ca. 1962

The "Clock of Nations" was created by artist Dale Clark and was the centerpiece of Midtown Plaza. Gruen and Associated designed the shopping center, which opened in April 1962 and became the second indoor mall in the nation. The rotating clock held 12 capsules containing puppets representing different nationalities living in Rochester. A capsule would open on the hour and a traditional folk song would play while the mechanized puppets would dance and spin.
