"Hank Smith Forerunner of the Johnson County War" by G. E. Lemmon, April 17, 1934

George Edward Lemmon (1857-1945) was a prominent South Dakota cattleman and is credited with starting the Western South Dakota Stockgrowers Association (SDSGA). Lemmon relates how cattle detective Sam Moses, an SDSGA employee loaned to the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, tracked Hank Smith. Smith was one of the suspected murderers of Deputy Marshal George Wellman who was shot and killed in an ambush near Buffalo, Wyoming on May 10, 1892, soon after the Johnson County War. At the time of his death, Wellman had replaced as foreman Frank Laberteaux of the H. A. Blair Cattle Company (Hoe Ranch) who was in custody at Ft. D. A. Russell for his participation in the War. Lemmon writes of the failure to convict Hank Smith and Smith’s activities afterward. See Annals of Wyoming: Smith, "Black Henry" 30:1:34-35 to see what's there.
