Long standing tensions between White and Chinese miners erupted in 1885 into what is today known as the "Rock Springs Massacre" in which at least 28 Chinese were murdered and 15 injured. Wyoming's territorial governor Francis E. Warren was seen as sympathetic to the Chinese, which angered whites in the area.
