Part Second: The Bloody Years of 1889-90-91 - The Murder of James Averill [sic] and Ella Watson (Cattle Kate)
Martin writes that from 1889 to 1891, Wyoming's large cattlemen and their allies murdered small ranchers James Averell, Ella Watson (more here), Tom Waggoner, Orley E. Jones, and John A. Tisdale and attempted to murder Nate Champion and Ross Gilbertson (more here). Martin quotes frequently from Asa Mercer's Banditti of the Plains, an account of the Johnson County War critical of the large cattlemen and one that Martin states is "gospel truth" and difficult to find due destruction of most copies.
